A Personal Odyssey: The Heart of the Build-A-Hand® Program
By Bill John, President / CEO / Co-Founder of Odyssey Teams
Yesterday was one of those days that reminds you why you do what you do. It was a day filled with emotion, connection, and the kind of transformation that can’t be measured in metrics alone.
We were in South Africa, hand-delivering prosthetic hands to people in need—an honor we at Odyssey Teams never take lightly. Once an organization completes a Build-A-Hand® program, our team has the privilege of bringing those hands to life, fitting them to recipients, and witnessing the ripple effect of compassion in action.
Meeting Dellon: A Story of Resilience
One of the recipients was Dellon. He lost his arm in 2014 due to an infection caused by broken glass from a window. His journey since then had been long and painful. The hospital had done all it could. His family had done all they could. And yet, Dellon remained without a prosthetic hand—until now.
We met Dellon in a room filled with about 15 people. They weren’t just spectators—they were his family. Every single one of them had walked through this tragedy with him.
As we prepared for the fitting, I silently hoped the extension would work. Dellon’s residual limb was small, and I knew the functionality would be limited. But I also knew that even limited functionality could mean the world—being able to carry items, open doors, or simply feel more whole.
The Moment Everything Changed
Dellon’s smiles were reserved at first, but he warmed up quickly. We joked about his new role as “The Terminator,” and the room began to buzz with laughter and light. I told him he could wear a long sleeve shirt if he wanted to cover the prosthetic. He nodded, but I could tell he was already proud.
Then something extraordinary happened.
Tears began to stream down the face of one of the older women in the room. Dellon’s sister spoke up, her voice filled with gratitude that moved everyone to tears. And then Dellon cried—happy tears.
This wasn’t just a hand. It was a symbol of hope, dignity, and possibility.
The Power of Family and Community
All 15 people in the room were Dellon’s family. They had shared his pain, and now they shared his joy.
One of his aunts began to sing. The others joined in. What followed was the most beautiful prayer—half sung, half spoken, and entirely heartfelt.
Two hours later, as we drove back, we received a text: Dellon was still crying. He was overwhelmed with happiness, with the feeling of being seen, supported, and whole.
Then the photos started coming in—Dellon smiling, standing tall, radiating confidence.
Why the Build-A-Hand® Program Matters
This is why the Build-A-Hand® program exists.
It’s not just about prosthetics. It’s about purpose. It’s about reminding people—both recipients and participants—that they matter. That their work matters. That their choices can change lives.
Every time a team builds a hand, they’re not just assembling plastic and metal. They’re assembling hope. They’re building bridges between cultures, between companies and communities, between strangers who become friends.
Dellon is my friend. He is a friend to all of us. And he is very, very happy.
The Ripple Effect of Purpose
Stories like Dellon’s are happening all over the world—often quietly, often without fanfare. But they are real. And they are powerful.
When organizations participate in the Build-A-Hand® program, they’re not just checking a CSR box. They’re creating moments that matter. They’re giving their teams a chance to connect with something bigger than themselves.
And that connection doesn’t fade. It carries over into the workplace, into relationships, into how people show up every day.
Why We Do What We Do
At Odyssey Teams, we ask ourselves daily: Why do we do this work?
The answer is simple. To reconnect people to the purpose and passion of their work—so they become more inspired, more connected, and more productive.
The Build-A-Hand® program is one of the most powerful tools we have to make that happen. It’s experiential. It’s emotional. And it’s unforgettable.
Join the Movement
If Dellon’s story moved you, imagine what it could mean for your team to be part of that journey.
Whether you’re planning a corporate retreat, a leadership summit, or a team-building event, the Build-A-Hand® program offers a chance to do something extraordinary.
