THE BIKE WILL MOVE YOUR TEAM TO GIVE THEIR BEST

A “job” is turned into a “purpose” in the face of our customer

Life Cycles was created to address a challenge nearly every organization faces. People dream about making a difference at a meeting and feeling something.  They lose sight of how much their actions, attention, sacrifice, and intention matter to their organization. As teams grow and responsibilities multiply, individuals often focus on their own tasks without seeing the ripple effect of their work. Silos form, communication narrows, and the sense of shared purpose fades.

Traditional team building activities rarely solve this. They may entertain, but they do not transform. They do not reconnect people to the impact they have on one another, on customers, or on the communities they serve.

Life Cycles changes that by giving teams a meaningful experience of contribution, craftsmanship, and purpose. Participants build brand new bicycles for children who will receive them the same day. This moment instantly reframes the meaning of their work and the influence they have on others.

Common challenges include:

  • Teams losing sight of how their work impacts others
  • Low emotional engagement and limited cross team connection
  • Team building that feels superficial or disconnected from real purpose
  • Employees craving meaning but rarely experiencing it directly
  • Organizational values that feel abstract instead of lived
  • Internal competition leads to a scarcity mindset
  • The WHY of their work is lost in the shuffle

A Different Approach to Team Connection and Contribution

Life Cycles is the original bicycle building team building program. Odyssey Teams created it in 2000 and has refined the process for more than two decades. Many companies now offer bike builds, but few match the depth, emotional resonance, or business relevance of the original.

Participants begin by assembling high quality bicycles, focusing on communication, precision, and teamwork. What starts as a building challenge quickly becomes something more. It becomes a reflection of how their actions affect others, how their attention to detail matters, and how their contribution supports the collective results.

Then comes the moment that defines Life Cycles and Odyssey.

After the bicycles are complete, the children who will receive them enter the room in a complete surprise. The energy shifts instantly. Participants often describe it as a moment they will never forget. Many remember receiving their own first bicycle, the freedom, the pride, the possibility. Now they get to give that same experience to a child who might not otherwise have the chance.

A powerful shift happens here. In the early stages of the build, teams often approach the work like any other project, making quick decisions about the handlebars or brakes and assuming that close enough will do. But when the children arrive and participants see the real customer standing in front of them, the mindset changes instantly. The standard rises. The details matter. The choices they made as a team suddenly reflect their values, their communication, and their commitment to excellence. It becomes a vivid lesson in ownership, accountability, and the influence their work has on others.

IF PEOPLE FEEL SOMETHING…THEY REMEMBER IT

Life Cycles gives teams a lived experience of how their actions influence others inside and outside the workplace. As participants build bicycles, they practice communication, collaboration, accountability, and attention to detail. They begin to see how every choice they make affects the final outcome and how their contribution supports the team’s success. The emotional reveal, when the children arrive to receive their bikes, anchors these lessons in a way no lecture or slide deck ever could. It is a moment of connection, gratitude, and perspective that stays with people long after the workshop ends.

The experience strengthens collaboration, accountability, empathy, and shared purpose. It reinforces company values and helps teams understand the real impact of their work. Life Cycles ignites passion for one’s role and creates a sense of unity that carries back into the workplace. When organizations share their Life Cycles experience, they inspire others to do the same. The generosity, the joy, and the impact ripple outward from the team to the children to the community and beyond.
